Paul McEnroe at the Star Tribune has written an article detailing the stories of Patricia Sanchez, whose case inspired the Mower County, Minnesota attorney's office and the Austin Police to agree not to arrest or charge undocumented crime victims for their document violations. The article also describes how the new policy helped Alejandro Jimenez-Gonzalez, an undocumented gunshot victim. Ms. Sanchez was eventually granted a U visa, allowing her to gain legal immigration status and Mr. Jimenez-Gonzalez is apparently applying for one as well.
The article is a great read which illustrates a policy which protects the relationship between the police and the community. To get a more general rundown of the policies law enforcement agencies have regarding their relationship with undocumented immigrants, read our previous article on the subject.
